Die Leute in der Zippoklinik verstehen sicherlich ihr Handwerk, sehen es aber evtl. nicht so eng mit der Rechtschreibung.
So könnte der Mann Guy Wetmore Etheridge (mit einem "r") sein.
"WOODLEAF - Guy Wetmore Etheridge, 90, died after a brief illness on Wednesday, August 10, at the home of his daughter in Chapel Hill, Born November 2, 1914 in Manteo, he was the son of the late Janie Wetmore and Augustus Guy Etheridge. He was a graduate of Woodleaf High School. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was employed at the Spencer Shops and later by Martin Marietta and Celanese Corp., retiring in 1979. In Woodleaf, he was a member of St. George's Episcopal Church, in the preservation of historic St. Andrew's Church; he was a founding member of the volunteer fire department and Civitan Club. He was also a member of the Scotch-Irish Masonic Lodge #154 in Cleveland for over 60 years and in the activities of Episcopal Diocese of N.C. Preceding him in death were his wife, Elizabeth Hackney Etheridge in 2001, and granddaughter, Elizabeth Leigh Brown in 1992. He is survived by his son, Richard Guy Etheridge of Gastonia, and his daughter Betsey Etheridge Brown of Chapel Hill. A funeral service was held August 14 at Summersett Memorial Chapel, Salisbury. das ist ja total abgefahren. Vielen Dank! Ich hatte auch schon gesehen, dass es viel mehr Etheridge mit einem r gibt. Werde mal versuchen den Sohn oder die Tochter zu kontaktieren. Nochmals danke!

nichts zu danken, hab gerne gemacht. Internet-Recherchen dieser Art reizen mich immer sehr. Wäre interessant zu erfahren, wie die Verwandten von Mr. Etheridge reagieren. Könnte mir vorstellen, dass sie das Erinnerungsstück an ihren Vater Dir abkaufen wollen. Vielleicht bist Du so nett und berichtest Du später hier darüber.

Hallo Michel,
da kann man wirklich sehr gespannt sein. Wenn ich am Anfang vielleicht zu 80% geglaubt habe, dass er der ehem. Besitzer war, so bin ich inzwischen ziemlich sicher. Die Hülse war sicherlich ein "Mitbringsel" aus dem Krieg. Und wenn ich die Münzen richtig lese, war er in Frankreich stationiert. Vielleicht war er am D-Day dabei? All das zu erfahren, wäre echt klasse. Hoffentlich erzählt der Sohn mehr darüber.

Noch ein kleiner Zusatz zum Leben des Mr. Etheridge:
"In the early 1950s when the communities of Rowan County were first organizing rural fire departments, a group of civic minded men met many times. In May of 1952 the Woodleaf Volunteer Fire Department, Inc. was chartered by the state. Mr. C. W. Harrell was elected President and Guy Etheridge was appointed Chief....."

Die Geschichte ist aufgelöst. Gestern kam eine Mail von Betsy, der Tochter von Guy. Hier ist sie:
Dear Michael,
I am sorry it has taken me so long to respond to your letter. I was interested to learn that you had purchased a lighter belonging to my father. Although his name was misspelled in the address from the Zippo box (the correct spelling is Etheridge), the address is correct. I waited to respond until I could locate information about his service during the war.
My father was not involved in the Normandy invasion, but he was in France and Belgium (as well as England and Wales) during the war. He enlisted in the Army Transportation Corps in 1943 and served in the 764th Railway Shop Battalion. He had worked for the Southern Railway in Salisbury North Carolina before the war and did similar work in the Army. He left for Europe in July 1944. In Wales his company prepred steam locomotives for service in France and in Cornwall, England, his company built petroleum barges. They went to Paris in October 1944 and operated the Battingnole railroad shops there. When the war ended, my father was assigned to Antwerp, Belgium after his battalion was decommissioned, before returning to the US. He was a member of the Army reserve and was called back into service in 1946-47 in the US. He lived the rest of his life in Woodleaf NC before he died in 2005 at age 90.
His brother, a bomber pilot, was shot down over Germany and was held at Stalag Luft 1 in Barth, Germany, until the end of the war. My father tried hard to find him after his release and then met him by chance at a railroad crossing in France. This was a story my father loved to tell.
